Worship According to Jesus
The Samaritans remained in the land of Israel during the Babylonian exile. They intermarried with the occupying nations and were considered half-breeds and outcasts by the Jews. There was then and still is today tremendous animosity between Jews and Palestinians.
The Samaritans continued a form of worship begun by Jereboam when he rebelled against Rehoboam after Solomon's death. Jereboam directed the northern tribes to worship in Samaria. Jesus rested at Jacob's well and this woman came to draw water during the day because she was a social outcast. When the conversation got uncomfortably personal, she quickly switched the subject to proper worship. Her question aside, what Christ taught about worship is critical to NT doctrine and practice.
