How are we helping God?

How do we go about helping God? Jacob had been instructed to return home but Jacob knew that there was a major issue between himself and his brother. He humbled himself by sending messengers in advance to notify Esau that he was coming home and he even called Esau his lord. He knew he needed God's help and asked for it. All of that was a good start but he soon panicked and started to try and help God out.
