John Girardeau

John Lafayette Girardeau (1825-98) was a prominent minister in the Southern Presbyterian Church in nineteenth-century America. In addition to ministering in Charleston and Columbia, South Carolina, he taught on the faculty of Columbia Theological Seminary, served as a Chaplain in the Confederate Army, and ministered most sympathetically and effectively to slaves and former slaves during his prodigious ministry. Noted for his powerful preaching, he produced a number of articles on the diaconate, theological questions, and philosophical debates.
