Difference between covenants?
Exposition
Service of Earthly Sanctuary (9:1-10)
a. Description (v.1-5)
b. Service (v.6-7)
c. Blessings (v.8-10)
Symbolic for present time & purified flesh, but could not perfect conscience. Was only promise of things to come.Service of Heavenly Sanctuary
a. Description (v.11)
Greater & more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, i.e. not of this creation. Moses told to make tabernacle after pattern that was shown him. Moses' tabernacle was only a copy of the true.
b. Service (v.12)
Wasn't with blood of goats & calves, but with Christ's own blood. Is greater sacrifice & even greater because not repeated annually but happens once for all.
c. Blessings (v.13-15)
Cleanses not only flesh, but also conscience. Actually redeemed or paid for transgressions under first covenant in order that people may receive inheritance.
- By analogy, our heavenly inheritance is secured by death of our testator (v.16-22)
Summary (v.23-28)
- Just as copies of heavenly things were cleansed with blood of sacrifice, heavenly things themselves had to be cleansed with greater sacrifices
- Christ entered heavenly sanctuary, not earthly
- He goes in once, not year after year
- He has borne our sins once for all & will appear again for salvation.
Application
People are being tempted to return to symbolical ritual which can only mean turning away from its fulfillment.
