Ruth #6: Spread Thy Skirt

Following Naomi’s risky plan, Ruth approaches Boaz at midnight. Awakened, Boaz does not question or castigate Ruth. Rather, just like when he greeted his workers, Boaz’s first thought is of the Lord and his first words are to bless in the name of the Lord, declaring that Ruth is a “worthy woman.” And in response to Ruth’s command to “spread thy skirt over thine handmaid” he agrees and accepts her marriage proposal. But then, he puts Ruth’s hopes on hold informing her that there is another Kinsman-Redeemer who must be consulted. He puts God’s Word above his love for Ruth, and in so doing shows how much he really does love her.
