Disorderly Worship: Part 2
Series 1 Corinthians Sermon Series
The text urges believers to pursue mature, orderly worship that reflects God's character of peace rather than confusion. Paul teaches that uninterpreted tongues can act as a sign of judgment, recalling Isaiah's prophecy that foreign, unintelligible speech signaled God's curse on unbelief, and warns the Corinthians not to mimic that by filling their gatherings with gibberish that edifies no one. Instead, prophecy—clear proclamation of God's Word—convicts hearts and leads both believers and outsiders to worship. Paul lays down practical rules: only two or three may speak in tongues and only if an interpreter is present; likewise, two or three prophets may speak, but each in turn and subject to the discernment of others. These commands safeguard the church's witness and ensure that every element of worship—songs, teaching, revelation—builds up the body. The message concludes that chaotic services spring from self-centered hearts, while Spirit-led order flows from humility and a desire to honor God, calling the church to reject pride and pursue the wisdom that is "pure, peaceable, and full of mercy."
