The First Commandment

Exodus 20:3

I. Exposition of the Commandment

1.  The Pre-eminence of God.
	Deu 6:4 -- Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:

Exo 12:12 -- For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will
smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against
all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

2.  The seriousness of this law      Deut. 13:6-11

II. The Application of this Commandment to all Men

1 John 5:21 -- Little children, keep yourselves from idols.
	

Matthew 22:34-40 (v. 37-38) -- Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the
LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
This is the first and great commandment.

1. Do I acknowledge God to be the only true God as He has
   revealed Himself in the Scriptures?

2. Do I acknowledge His providence toward me is holy & wise?

3. Do I keep Him in constant remembrance?

III. The Work of Christ and the First Commandment

Christ is the only Righteous One.
Christ kept this commandment perfectly.
His perfect obedience is imputed to all who are in Christ.
