Seeing, Savoring & Succumbing to Sin

Up to this point David's life has been a demonstration of godliness. He has written psalms while enduring threatening peril, he has waited upon the Lord, defeated many enemies and is finally enjoying rest and prosperity. As so often happens, the life of ease becomes the occasion during which we are most vulnerable to sin. So too with David.

Rather than go out and lead his well trained armies, he stays home. Being free to relax and enjoy the goodness of the Lord, he falls to the lust of his flesh and the sin he indulges in marrs his life forever. His life will never be the same. His family will begin to unravel as the effects of sin ripple outward with great devastation.

Even though he had many wives, as is sadly often the case, it is what we don't have that has the greatest appeal.

From this account we can learn many things which we would be wise to heed and save ourselves from many ruinous consequences.
These lessons include -

  1. We must be careful of idle time.
  2. We must guard against the pattern of sin.
  3. Covering one sin leads to another.
  4. Sin brings ruin and death.
  5. Sin makes us hard and selfish.
  6. Sin is always committed before the eyes of the Lord.
