A Limit to Forgiveness???
Series Living in Loving Community
Q. Is there a limit to the amount of forgiveness we offer? Matthew 18:21-35
A. No, we have received and are expected to give an unlimited supply of forgiveness.
a) Can the offender exhaust their allowance? Can they sin so much that you are no longer required to forgive?
No, extent of the forgiveness that we offer is not based on what they deserve, but rather it is based on the extent of their need.
b) Can we exhaust our supply?
No, the extent of the forgiveness that we offer is not based on our natural capacity or ability to bestow forgiveness, but rather it is based on the amount of forgiveness we have received from God.
As sinners, we owed a debt we could not pay; but He paid a debt He did not owe. Now, he extends to us the opportunity to follow his example and he expects us to live take every opportunity to offer forgiveness that we can.
Jesus makes both of these points quite clear in his parable about the unforgiving servant.
