From Torment to Testimony
The sermon explores the transformative power of Jesus, drawing parallels between the deliverance of a demon-possessed man and the importance of personal testimony. It emphasizes that true change stems from the touch of Jesus mingled with a surrender of our lives into His hands, which manifest His work to redefine identity and purpose, rather than clinging to past struggles or societal expectations. The message underscores that while everyone battles internal and external tormentors, Jesus offers freedom and a renewed sense of mission, urging listeners to embrace a life of faith and actively share their experiences of divine grace, recognizing that Jesus's example, not our own personal qualities, should serve as the ultimate standard.
Let's weave three Gospel accounts of the demoniac into a strong application about tormentors, transformation, testimony, and the treasure of following Jesus.
From Torment to Testimony
Matthew 8:28–34; Mark 5:1–20; Luke 8:26–39
We've all had tormentors in life.
Some of them are external — circumstances, opposition, unexpected loss.
Some are internal — emotional instability, sin patterns, destructive thinking.
Some are spiritual — unseen forces working against our walk with Christ.
The man we meet in this story faced all three at once.
A Man No One Could Tame
When Jesus crossed into the region of the Gadarenes, He stepped into a place that wanted nothing to do with Him — but desperately needed Him.
Out from the tombs came a man everyone feared.
Matthew tells us there were actually two men, but the focus is on one.
Mark and Luke describe him vividly:
• He lived among the dead, without clothes, without a home.
