#6: Mrs. Church

Through Christ's atonement, believers are forgiven, united to Him, and become part of His body—the Church. This union is central to understanding Christian life within God's family. The Church is described as the bride of Christ and includes all who are called by Him.

The Church consists of the Church Triumphant (believers in heaven) and the Church Militant (believers on earth). The Church is inherently corporate, described variously as a flock, holy nation, kingdom, family, body, and temple. Membership in Christ means belonging to His Church—it is not optional.

The Church is both an organism (a living body) and an organization (with structure and leadership). In Acts, churches were organized with elders, demonstrating the Church's visible, orderly nature. Some reject the organized Church due to division, scandals, or a desire for autonomy, yet Scripture affirms its necessity.

The Church is also both visible (local congregations, visible activities) and invisible (comprising the elect known only to God). True and false believers exist side by side within the visible Church.

Three essential marks of a true Church are:

  1. Pure doctrine (faithful to apostolic teaching)
  2. Proper administration of sacraments (baptism and the Lord's Supper)
  3. Exercise of discipline (upholding purity and order)

Additional characteristics include fellowship, worship, mutual care, evangelism, and holiness.

To be a Christian is to be part of both the invisible and visible Church. Loving Christ means loving His organized Church. Every believer is called to cherish and serve in it, despite its imperfections, as an essential part of following Jesus.
