A Christian's Reset Button

Context
The “jubilee” is instituted here in Lev. 25 and a few other rules are given in ch. 27 (vv. 17-24). Num. 36:4 also mentions it. The teaching is simple, after seven sabbath years (7x7 = 49), the year after, the fiftieth year is the year of Jubilee. Jubilee meant the blowing of the ram’s horn (“you shall sound the loud trumpet” v. 9).
The idea is simple — “Land and humans were not to be owned by other humans, for both belong to the Lord (24:23, 42). The soil was to have a “sabbath” every seven years, but in the fiftieth year (7x7+1), the land itself would be “released” back to its original owner. Similarly, a slave, someone indentured because of debt, could be released by a kinsman or by the occurrence of the Jubilee.” (Currid) The land rests for two years 49th and 50th and each person receives back his inheritance and any person serving as a slave (indentured servant) is set free.
We have no evidence that Israel ever observed this.
Observations
I. God’s Sovereignty and Ownership determined Israel’s life in the land.
II. The Atonement is the foundation of Jubilee (v. 9).
III. Faith is required in order to obey (vv. 18-22).
IV. This Jubilee foreshadowed Christ’s full Jubilee.
Applications

  1. Realize that only in Christ is there a reset button.
  2. Recognize that your inheritance in Christ can never be lost.
  3. Resist all spiritual, moral, and physical enslavement.
  4. Wait for the full jubilee to come.
  5. Proclaim liberty to those enslaved in sin and under damnation.
