Imagine a nuclear explosions. All of the destruction. Then imagine what it would look like if you could watch that whole explosion in reverse order. Imagine seeing all of those splinters flying back into living trees and clouds of concrete fragments instantly reconstructing a whole city. Sounds outrageous. Yet when God restores all things, the restoration will be even more dramatic. God will display vast power. Jesus' disciples were expecting this display immediately, but they didn't see it. So when Jesus described the kingdom of God as a mustard seed, and as yeast, it doesn't sound reasonable to them. They wanted the reverse explosion, not a helpless speck. But Jesus is exhibiting two natural phenomena that begin tiny, then grow to become huge. Seems impossible, but these two seemingly impossible everyday phenomena, are an illustration of the seeming impossibility of the kingdom of heaven. At the crucifixion, the disciples must have found it hard to believe that such a death could be the catalyst for such a glorious kingdom. But look at us now, millennia later, part of a vast and growing network of Christians, that began like yeast and like a mustard seed. And this is only the germinal start...
