A Man Standing in the Gap - Christ, the Anointed Mediator

Idea: Isaiah 58 and 59 identify a problem. Why is God so distant? The problem was not that God could not hear, or that He could hear but could not act. Rather, the distance comes because of sin. But something beautiful happens in this passage. The words move from acknowledgement of sin to confession, then from confession, God answers with forgiveness and salvation based on a "man standing in the gap." or in other words, based on the person and work of Jesus.

This sermon treats the entire chapter so as to show the progression from confrontation, to confession, to forgiveness. My aim is to urge those who see themselves as lost in the darkness of sin, to see instead that may come in repentance to the one who has promised forgiveness.
