#8: Debts and Forgiveness
Series Living in God's Family
Forgiveness lies at the heart of the Christian life. In the Lord's Prayer (Matt. 6:12), Jesus teaches us to ask God to forgive our "debts" as we forgive others. These debts are sins—our failure to give God the perfect honor, love, and obedience we owe. Since we cannot pay, God releases us through Christ. Because He forgives, we must also forgive.
Jesus underscores this in Matthew 6:14–15: if we refuse to forgive others, God will not forgive us. Forgiving demonstrates that we grasp the depth of God's mercy toward us. To withhold forgiveness reveals hypocrisy and a lack of true repentance.
The parable of the unforgiving servant (Matt. 18:21–35) shows the seriousness of this. A servant forgiven an unpayable debt of 10,000 talents refuses to forgive a fellow servant's small debt. His hard-heartedness leads to judgment. Likewise, God expects us to forgive continually ("70x7"), from the heart.
True forgiveness is not casual or rote—it releases the debt fully, just as God releases ours. Remembering how great our sin is, and how costly Christ's sacrifice was, compels us to forgive freely. To do otherwise is to reject God's mercy. As C.S. Lewis wrote, there are no exceptions—God means what He says.
