David's situation is interrupted by the relating of Saul's being cut from communion with God. This interruption shows us the importance of a relationship with God. We see Saul in verse 3 in desperate straits. Had he been a man of faith, his reaction to the Philistines would have been different, Instead he seeks the help of a witch under the cover of darkness. Evil often works its work at night. We see a desperate Saul just before his end.
