The War Within

Over the centuries there has been much debate over the interpretation of these verses. Is Paul referring to himself as an unconverted man? Or is he speaking of himself as an immature but true believer? Or, and this is the interpretation favored here, is he speaking of himself as a mature believer? Paul found that as he grew in grace there were two operative principles working inside of him: the law of his mind, and the law of sin. He found that at every stage of his Christian growth, sin still easily besets. Yet in the midst of Paul's discouragement over his own remaining sin, he found hope to persevere in the journey. He knew that one day Christ would set him free from even the presence of sin. But until that Day, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
