The Saint's Enemies: The Flesh
Series Spiritual Warfare
The Christian life is defined by a profound tension: a state of peace with God and an ongoing, irreconcilable war against the flesh—the inner propensity to sin that remains even after regeneration. Though believers have been transformed by the Holy Spirit and possess new natures, they still wrestle with lingering corruptions, as Scripture consistently portrays the flesh and the Spirit as opposing forces locked in mortal combat. This internal dualism, evident in Paul's writings, especially Romans 7 and Galatians 5, reveals that the Christian's struggle is not merely external but deeply personal, with sinful desires arising from within and waging war against the soul. The flesh manifests in a range of vices—from sexual immorality and idolatry to envy, wrath, and selfish ambition—each a manifestation of the fallen human heart seeking to dominate rather than submit. Despite the reality of this perpetual conflict, believers are called to walk in the Spirit, mortify the flesh, and rely on God's grace, knowing that while victory over sin is assured in Christ, the battle continues until Christ's return or until death.
