The Wretchedness of Sin

These days it is all to common for preachers to not want to offend the hearers. We downplay sin in our sermons and water down key doctrinal truths, such as the total depravity of man.

As ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ, we do not need to convince those we are witnessing to that mankind is sinful. That's the Holy Spirit's job. We do, however, need to preach the offensive wretchedness of sin that the Bible says it is. Therein is the Cross of Jesus Christ lifted up. Therein is our Lord Jesus highly exalted.

It is only when the extent of the total depravity of man begins to be understood can we begin to understand the excellency and sufficiency of Christ's penal substitutionary death upon the Cross.
