Intro
The 5 prisoners of Lyons are condemned to death in 1552 for heresy. In May 1553 they're told to prepare to be publicly burned at the stake. No attempts to intercede & deliver them avail. John Calvin writes them a letter of consolation (#318 in his collected works), "Wherever we look here below, God has stopped the way" (cf Prov 21:1). Is this Biblical?
Expos: Nothing happens apart from our Father's will
The Lord delivered [Peter] from the hand of Herod,v11. What about James? The Lord did not deliver him & gave him into Herod's hand? Jesus tells Pilate, You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above, Jn 19:10-11;cf Acts 2:22-23,4:27-28;Mt 10:27-31
Obj: Does this mean God is author of evil?
God forbid! He works all their evil plans & deeds for good, Rom 8:28. He is not the author of sin & cannot be (Jam 1:17,Job 34:10,12;cf Gen 50:20,Ps 76)

Why would the Lord grant Herod the power to do this evil agnst his beloved friend & Apostle? As an occasion for testimony, to bring salvation to the world, Acts 1:8;Lk 21:12-17;Acts 12:18-24;9:13-16
App: How will you live,suffer,die?
These things are in store for us all. The question is not whether we will live,suffer,die, but how. Will you glorify God in your living, suffering & dying? Will it be to you an occasion for testimony?
