#5: Forgive Yourself?

Despite Christ's work on the cross, many struggle to receive forgiveness rightly. Human pride resists the free gift of salvation, often trying to add to God's grace or doubting His ability to forgive. We deceive ourselves into thinking our sin is too great or that our feelings define reality. This leads to unbelief—doubting God's promises—and blindness, failing to see the truth of forgiveness in Christ.

Forgiveness is not based on feelings but on God's judicial act. While emotions such as peace, joy, and cleansing may follow, they do not determine forgiveness. Instead of trusting feelings, we must trust in Christ, God's Word, and the truth of the Gospel.

Some attempt to "forgive themselves," but this idea has no biblical basis. Forgiveness is transactional—granted by God, not by oneself. The desire to forgive oneself often stems from unresolved guilt, pride, regret, and an unwillingness to accept God's judgment and grace.

In Christ, there is no condemnation. Our need is not self-forgiveness, but divine forgiveness. Assurance comes not through feelings, but through faith in Christ's finished work. As Nancy Leigh DeMoss notes, "Forgiveness isn't something you can give yourself. It is something God has purchased for you with His own blood."
