The Davidic Covenant eternally grants the right to reign to David's heir (which Herod was not, Matthew 2:1-2). "Son of David" will become a messianic term in the NT. "Messiah" and ultimately "Christ" (same meaning) emerge from this tremendously important covenant. Plus there remain promises for God to keep in the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ.
