Baptism Illustrated by the Flood

Baptism Illustrated by the Flood
Sermon 29 in I Peter Series

1 Peter 3:20-22

I. The Illustration Explained 20-21
1. 20b – Eight souls were saved through water
2. v. 21a --There is also an antitype which now saves us (you)
Antitype – “corresponds to” – it is an illustration.
Now saves us – present active indicative.
Continual – active – and real
3. v. 21b -- the answer of a good conscience toward God

II. The Illustration Applied – v. 21b-22

III. Two great Errors concerning Baptism

  1. There can be no salvation without Baptism.
  2. Baptism is not important.

IV. The Ethiopian Eunuch, an Example of NT Baptism
Acts 8:30-39

V. Practical Concerns regarding Baptism
1. Since it appears to be the N.T. practice to immediately baptize
converts, why don't we adopt that practice today?
2. Do those we baptize become members of the church, or do they need
to join at a later date after they have become more knowledgeable?
3. Since believers are to be baptized, and baptism in the Scriptures
occurs shortly after conversion, should young children who appear
to be converted be baptized, or should they wait?
