John - Mary anoints Jesus
Series Gospel according to John
When Jesus defends someone we should take notice. The criticism of waste was understandable, but Jesus called it seemly. Mary act was an act of worship, saying 'He is worthy of all I have and am'. It had to do with his death, and the anointing was linked to the hope of resurrection. Mary 'extravagance' reflected Jesus' spirit - his love giving himself to and for his enemies. When we grasp that we cannot remain tight fisted. The disciples made the mistake of thinking in commercial terms (maximum gain for minimum expenditure) - that is not God's way. It was God's character that Jesus was defending. Just as the Father rewarded him for his loving offering so Jesus rewards Mary - this is still told about her. Those who love God most know him best. It will show in our lives - even in the people to whom we show hospitality (Luke 14:12-14). We will not lose out by sharing the love of God for he will resource us when we honour him by showing his spirit in our lives.
