Surrender or Die…

Surrender or Die: The Gospel in the Life of Zedekiah and Jeremiah

The message explores themes of obedience, surrender, and faith through the lens of Older Testament narratives, particularly the story of Zedekiah and the Ethiopian servant Ebed-Melech. It emphasizes the importance of trusting God's plan, even when it's difficult to understand, and contrasts Zedekiah's defiance with Ebed-Melech's courageous act of service. The preacher draws parallels between these ancient stories and the gospel experience, highlighting the need to relinquish control and embrace God's grace, ultimately presenting a call to surrender to Jesus and proclaim his message to others, recognizing that God's truth transcends earthly pursuits and offers a path to flourishing.

Jeremiah 21, 37–39 • A Prophetic Picture of the Gospel Call

A Way Set Before Us

There are only two paths before every man and woman: the way of life and the way of death. God made this plain to King Zedekiah through the prophet Jeremiah. And He makes it plain to us through the cross of Jesus Christ.

Zedekiah stands as a tragic picture of mankind without Christ: stubborn, indecisive, prideful, and ultimately blind. But through Jeremiah's suffering, and Ebed-Melech's courageous compassion, we're shown the beauty of surrender, the promise of deliverance, and the quiet favor of a faithful God.

I. The King Who Wouldn't Surrender

Truth: Jeremiah 21:1–10

Zedekiah was the king of Judah during the final collapse of Jerusalem. Yet his real struggle wasn't with Babylon — it was with God.

God's message to Zedekiah was crystal clear:

"Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death" (Jer. 21:8).
