Consider the Cost

In this hard teaching of Jesus he warns that there is a cost to being a Christian. But how should we interpret the words of this text? To take it literally would mean that all true Christians should be 'mother-hating, masochists living as desert hermits without possessions'. Jesus use of hyperbole is intended to reveal that the path of the disciple will not be easy, and one should consider before they enter too quickly.
