Days of Genesis and our Common Parents

How should we understand the days of Genesis 1-2? I believe that these are days as we know them, that is, roughly 24 hour days. But I can fellowship with people who do not believe that, people such as St. Augustine, who believed that each day represented a vast stretch of time.

What is essential to the Christian Faith, and where we need to draw a line in the sand, is that all of humankind descended from a common pair of human ancestors. Without Adam and Eve being our common ancestors, the entire framework of the Bible collapses because the Bible is built around Creation, the Fall and Redemption in Jesus Christ.

Philosophically, I reject naturalism out of hand, and I do so because the Bible rejects naturalism out of hand. As I came to believe that God does miracles, I began to experience incredibly dramatic answers to prayer.
