Donatism

Roman Persecution of the Church under the Roman Emperor Diocletian in the early 4th century was the root of the doctrinal errors of the Donatists, and provides a background for understanding the Roman Catholic position on the efficacy of Sacraments. The Biblical teaching on this subject was stated clearly in the Westminster Confession of Faith Chapter 27.3.
