Murderous Envy

This opening history of Jacob's family is presented as one of contrasts between the favored son Joseph (possibly by virtue of Ruben's losing the birthright) and the wickedness of his brothers in a negative light. The contrast is made more stark through the prophetic dreams given to Joseph that foments hearts of murderous intent. For the believer, Joseph illustrates that honesty and integrity can bring forth suffering and the overall sovereignty of God.
