It Was For Freedom That Christ Set Us Free

All forms of slavery and all forms of freedoms are not the same. There is physical slavery, when one human being is owned by another

There is religious slavery, where a government forces its citizens to be a part of a state religion, and if a citizen refuses, or practices a religion unapproved by the state, there are severe punishments.

Then there is spiritual slavery, where a person chooses to live according to ceremonies, rituals, and rules that are thought to make a person acceptable to God; self-righteousness.

Spiritual slavery, including idolatry, can be cultural, or may be a matter of choice by the individual.

The same principles apply to freedom. No one is free if owned by another human.
