In Wrath Remember Mercy

In order to understand the significance of this verse, prayer, we must see what happened in chapters 1-2. He complained about the wickedness and injustice in Judah in 1:2-4. God says he has an answer — He will send the Chaldeans (1:5-11). Habakkuk responds again by saying that they are worse than God’s people (v. 13) (1:12-2:1). God once again reiterates his point but this time adds the fact that the Babylonians will also be judged (2:6-20).
Habakkuk had concerns, he was perplexed and dismayed by God’s response. That characterized chapters one and two.

God’s Word & Presence
A. How did he get here? We are not told but we can make a few clear observations.
•He is no longer complaining and bewildered, etc. He is no longer questioning God’s justice — he now seems to see God’s judgment as appropriate and fitting. Lloyd-Jones believes that he stopped thinking about his own nation, the Chaldeans, etc. and contemplated only God. That is true. But how did that happen? It was God's Word and Presence.
I. GOD’S WORD AND PRESENCE creates reverence and humility.
II. GOD’S WORD AND PRESENCE encourages hopeful prayer.
