Living to Please God (II) - Brotherly Love
Series 1 Thessalonians
Introduction:
Here Paul speaks about brotherly love. What is "brotherly love"? Answer: Philadelphia - brother by birth. (Luke 8:21) There are two characteristics of Christian brotherly love to recognize:
A. It is Christian self-denying love as applied to the family of God
B. It is a vital and essential mark of a true and living faith (I John 3:14)
In this passage, Paul lays out the following topics for us to consider:
I. Qualities of brotherly love
We are God-taught grace. (v9)
a. To be taught by God is to be taught by the indwelling Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 3:12-16)
b. This is in the nature of being a Christian (1 John 3:9-10 ESV)It is an observable grace. (v10)
It is a growing grace. (v10)
II. Applications of brotherly love (v11)
Live a quiet life
a. Get stirred up about a quiet life
b. It's not separating ourselves from humanity but rather to live an unhurried lifeMind your own business
Work with your hands
III. Fruits of brotherly love
- A good witness
- A productive live (v12)
