Experimental Christianity

Jonathan Edwards used this designation of religion to refer to the practical outworking of the doctrines of the Gospel in the lives of individual believers. Against the cold formalism that had developed in New England Puritanism by the middle of the 18th Century, Edwards argued for a return to the warmth and holiness of the apostolic faith. Ultimately, he was arguing for the Gospel doctrine of regeneration. He would say that it produces a definite and everlasting change in the soul of every sinner who is born again.
