Series Survey of 1 Corinthians
REVIEW: Chapter 13 was exhortation by Paul of the superiority of love amongst the various spiritual gifts and the limits of gifts without love.
Thesis/Context: Love will NEVER fail, but the super gifts the Corinthians so earnestly coveted will pass away.
Super Gift Positions:
- CONTINUIST: disappointment, deceit, guilt
- CESSATIONIST: arrogance
- OPEN: ambivalent anxiety
Verse 8 :
- Prophecy will pass away.
- meaning = wiped away
- speak in place of another person
- in scripture = infallible Word of God
- Tongues will cease.
- meaning = cease by itself for lack of fuel
- connected with prophecy, new revelation
- tongue = known language
- Knowledge will cease
- meaning = immediate divine enlightenment
- 1 Corinthians 12:8-10 shows tongue gifting
different person than interpret gifting =
checks and balances for establishing truth
and verifying gifts. - When prophecy ceases, knowledge would too.
