A Study on the Resurrections
Series Eschatology
The New Testament presents a divinely ordered sequence of bodily resurrections, not a single event, with two fundamental categories: the first resurrection unto life and the second resurrection unto judgment. Christ's resurrection is the foundational 'firstfruits,' guaranteeing the future resurrection of all believers, including church-age saints at the rapture, tribulation martyrs at Christ's return, Old Testament saints at the millennial inauguration, and the two witnesses during the tribulation. These are all part of the same resurrection category—bodily, glorious, and eternal—distinguished by their destiny, not their timing. In contrast, the final resurrection of the unrighteous occurs after the millennium, when all unbelievers are raised for judgment and cast into the lake of fire, a final and irreversible destiny. The central theological significance lies in God's sovereignty, the certainty of judgment, and the believer's hope anchored in Christ's victory over death, calling every person to consider which resurrection they will join—eternal life or eternal condemnation.
