Hebrews 6:2-3

Sermon by John-William Noble

The sermon, rooted in Hebrews 6:2–3, calls believers to move beyond the foundational elements of the Old Testament system - such as ceremonial washings, the laying on of hands, and rituals associated with repentance and judgement - on the basis that these have been fulfilled in Christ. It emphasises that true spiritual maturity comes not through adherence to shadowy ordinances, but through a living, personal faith in Christ, who is the ultimate fulfilment of all that the law foreshadowed.

The passage also warns of the danger of apostasy, underscoring that those who have experienced the grace of God yet turn away from Christ cannot be restored to repentance, since they reject the once-for-all sacrifice of Christ. Yet the sermon offers profound comfort by affirming that spiritual growth and perseverance do not depend on human effort, but are sustained by God's sovereign will, as expressed in the promise that believers will mature "if God permits".

This divine sovereignty, far from negating human responsibility, provides the very foundation of Christian assurance: believers are called to "work out their salvation with fear and trembling", knowing that God Himself is at work in them for His good pleasure.
