Living as Peaceable Citizens
Series God's Saving Grace
In Romans 13, the apostle Paul calls us to live as peaceful citizens, submitting to civil authorities as an act of obedience to God. This instruction, given in a context of oppression and Roman rule, reminds us that the gospel does not call us to political rebellion, but to a life transformed by grace. God, in His wisdom, has established both the church and civil government, each with a distinct purpose. That is why, when you submit humbly to the authorities, you are honoring Christ, who reigns over all authority. This submission is not blind or absolute, for when human commands contradict God's law, our highest loyalty will always be to the King of kings. But as long as the authorities fulfill their role of maintaining order and punishing evil, your obedience—even when it is difficult—bears witness to a living trust in the sovereign rule of the Lord.
