Christ is Husband, Not Caesar
Series Church and State
Christ is the head of the church, not Caesar. Christ is the husband of the church, not Caesar. We all know this, but we don't seem to understand its profound ramifications. Though the church is to submit to Caesar in that realm of governance which Christ delegated to Caesar, there are other realms not given to Caesar. The church is one of those realms. Christ did not delegate to Caesar the job of running the church. If we want to know what to believe, we don't ask Caesar. If we want to know how to pray, we don't ask Caesar. If we want to know how to worship, we don't ask Caesar. If we want to know what is acceptable worship on Sunday and what might serve as a substitute for in-person corporate worship, we shouldn't ask Caesar. That's not his realm, not his expertise, and not his business. If Caesar intrudes in the household affairs of the church, the church should politely inform Caesar that she already has a husband and is not in need of another. Christ appointed the civil authorities to punish wicked people. That is Caesar's job. It is not his job to manage the worship services of the church and tell her when, how and in what manner she can worship.
