Ephesians 6:1-4

Honor your father and mother that it may be well with you. This is a specific promise from God. Such things have benefits in this life and the life to come. There is respect and honor that is earned, and there is the kind that is due the position. There is a reponsibility of fathers not to exasperate children - discipline them in such a way that they lose heart. It becomes difficult for them to be obedient when I am unreasonable and unthoughtful.
The father is the one ultimately responsible for the home.
