The Prerogatives of Divine Sonship

Collectors approach Peter asking him “Does your teacher fulfill the double-drachma?” which provides us with yet another moment in the life of Christ to consider Jesus' identity and position, as well as to observe how He utilized that position. As the Son of God, Jesus certainly had divine rights and privileges which could not be taken away from Him. He was completely free of man-made regulations, and yet how did He live out his earthly life? What dictated Jesus' actions in moments like these?

Here in Mt 17:22-27 (and Mk 9:30-32, Lk 9:43b-45) in a sermon entitled The Prerogatives of Divine Sonship we are presented with at least three lessons involving the discharge of the Son of God's office:

  1. The Prerogatives of Divine Sonship are manifest in everyday circumstances.
  2. The Prerogatives of Divine Sonship have implications on one's obligations/allegiances.
  3. The Prerogatives of Divine Sonship are employed with loving consideration!
