The Son's Glory & The Father's Love
Series The Gospel According to John
- We are still the objects of his concern before His death (v. 24).
- Jesus wants the Father’s love for Him to be in us (v. 26).
- Christ sees through the suffering to the blessed glory awaiting Him.
Jesus’ petition includes two things
The syntax of the text indicates that Christ desires two things (indicated by the two hina) — that we be with Him and that we behold His glory. Our Lord’s final petition actually includes two requests — the latter dependent on the former.
- He wants us to be with Him.
- He wants us to behold His glory.
CONCLUSION
This petition was for our good and for His glory. The first and the last petition are intertwined!
Piper says that God is most glorified when we are most satisfied in Him. From this petition we can truly say that Jesus is most glorified if our desire is to be with Him and to behold His glory! He will be a glorious sight for our sore tired eyes!
