  1. Beatitude #1 (v. 3)
      A. The objects: The poor in spirit
        1. Poor: Lacking resources, needy, destitute
        2. In spirit: Immaterial, eternal part of people
      B. The blessing: The kingdom of heaven is theirs
        1. The kingdom is ours
        2. There are more blessings to come
  2. Beatitude #2 (v. 4)
      A. The objects: Those who mourn
        1. It is a recognition of my sin, my poverty, that leads me to mourn
        2. Woe is me (Is 6:5)
      B. The blessing: They will be comforted
        1. Christ came to give comfort for those who mourn (Is 61:2-3)
        2. Christ has made everything new (Revelation 21:4)
  3. Beatitude #3 (v. 5)
      A. The objects: The meek (Ps 37:11)
        1. Meek: Not overly impressed by the sense of self-importance; gentle
        2. Contrasted with evildoers (Ps 37:7-9) 
          a. Moses (Numbers 12)
          b. Christ (Matthew 11:29-30)
      B. The blessing: They will inherit the earth
        1. Application: Responses in marriage
        2. Application: Responses to children
        3. Application: Relationship with God (James 1:19-21)
  4. Beatitude #4 (v. 6)
      A. The objects: Those who hunger and thirst for righteousness
        1. Elements of righteousness: 
          a. Personal (standing with God) (5:20)
          b. How we live (6:1)
          c. Socially justice
      B. The blessing: They will be satisfied (with righteousness) (Phil 3:8-9)
        1. Share the same satisfaction with others
