A Great King

This Psalm celebrates the activity of God fulfilling his promises to Israel in recounting how He fought for them as their King. It is divided up onto two distinct sections each beginning with commands in verses 1 and 6. Verse 5 serves as the epicenter of the Psalm: God ascending or going up. God frequently ascends in the Old Testament when He has finished his redemption, rescue, or giving of promises. It is a mark of completion. This Psalm celebrates the fact that God has completed work for them and looks forward to it being completed once and for all. Read Christologically, we see that the Psalm has parallels to the ascension of Christ in completing His work of rescue, redemption, and promise to His people in defeating His enemies. He has now ascended and sent His Holy Spirit to lead His people in marching onward to bring the nations to Christ.
