Suffocating in Religious Camouflage
Series Jesus Through Luke's Eyes
What was it that got Jesus crucified? He ate and drank. That was part of it. He didn't seem to show the reverence of fasting. The prescribed rituals were considered good and right, and Jesus was indifferent to them. This is part of what got Him killed. The Pharisees thought the had a way to bring in the kingdom--through extreme obedience. Jesus too was preaching the kingdom, but was claiming that the Pharisees approach was powerless. This irritated them. Jesus was not merely claiming to be a guide or guru to show people how to enter the kingdom, but he was actually claiming to be the way to the kingdom. These religious people were missing this, even though their holy book was all about it! Their religious system was in fact keeping them from the kingdom. Their unbelief was camouflaged by their religious fervency. Jesus compares their religious practices to weeping at a wedding; bizarre and out of place. Jesus was serious about the exclusivity of the Gospel. They hated that! Satan doesn't mind if you are so camouflaged in a religious system that you are kept from longing to be satisfied with the truth.
