True Character of the Fear of God, part 3
Series The Fear of God
Mr. Carroll concludes Bunyan's chapter on the sources of godly fear, covering fear as flowing from sound repentance (2 Corinthians 7:11, where godly sorrow produces diligence, indignation, fear, zeal, and vindication), from the forgiveness of sins (Psalm 130:4—"there is forgiveness with you that you may be feared"), from due consideration of God's judgments (the death of Uzzah in 1 Chronicles 13, with reference to R.C. Sproul), and from the conviction of God's all-seeing eye (1 Kings 8:37–40, Ecclesiastes 12:13–14) and His impartial judgment (1 Peter 1:17). He then reviews "powerful sanctification," urging the class to study the Westminster Larger Catechism on the sixth commandment as an illustration of the comprehensive scope of duties required and sins forbidden under the fear of God.
