The 2nd Commandment - What Is Forbidden?

Worshiping false or foreign gods is not as black-and-white a sin as we may be prone to think. As pastor David Shiflet asserts , 'The very essence of idolatry is [any] attempt to bring God down to men...an attempt to make the Divine safe and manageable...to take that which is incomprehensible and reduce it into something that I can put my hands on...' This is, as he points out, 'the immediate context of the command here...' In this message, he exposes how we are tempted to think it doesn't apply to us because we don't do things the way idol-making pagan worshipers did. This is a dangerous way of misconstruing the second commandment.
