Is the Christian life a matter of passive trust or active obedience? When discussing Salvation in Christ, sinful men often error on one of two sides. Either an over emphasis on Human responsibility (its really up to me) or God's Sovereignty (let Him do all the work - passivity) While preaching this text, Pastor Curt strikes the biblical balance between the two as he explains Sanctification. We looked at how we must work out you salvation unto “completion”. Work it out “consistently” in obedience and in the “conduct” of fear and trembling. In verse 13, we get the encouragement and motivation as we see that God is working in us. Our working out own salvation is only possible because of God's Working. God is the Agent, He provides the enabling, He activates and energizes!! He energizes us—to work effectually and productively. Jonathan Edwards has written of the importance of a proper understanding of this text when he wrote, “These Verses From St. Paul hit me when I was about twenty-two they have shaped my theology ever since.”
