Give Yourself, To Love and Build
PART 1: A COMMAND FROM GOD, NOT MAN
1 Timothy 1:1
Paul begins by clarifying the authority of his apostleship: "Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ, by the commandment of God our Savior." This wasn't self-appointed ministry—it was a divine assignment. Paul received a heavenly command (not a suggestion or ambition) to do what he was doing. Likewise, Jesus said in John 10:18 that He had the authority to lay down His life and take it up again—why? "This command I have received from My Father."
Application:
When God gives a command, He also gives the authority and grace to fulfill it. If He has planted you in a specific place, gifted you for a unique ministry, or called you to speak truth—He has already released the power and provision for you to walk it out.
PART 2: THE PURPOSE OF THE CHARGE
1 Timothy 1:5
Paul reminds Timothy of the aim of every faithful minister: "The purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith."
This is the bullseye of all sound teaching: godly edification rooted in holy love. That love is:
• Pure in heart – unpolluted by pride, performance, or manipulation.
• Clear in conscience – not dulled by guilt or double-mindedness.
• Sincere in faith – authentic trust in Christ, not religious appearance.
Warning:
Some, Paul says, had "swerved" from this aim. They became more interested in fables, genealogies, and speculation. The result? Fruitless arguments instead of fruitful growth (v.4, 6). Their teaching created more questions than it answered, and their doctrine shipwrecked lives (v.19).
