Distress overcome

Psalm 13

'God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good' (Genesis 1.31).

Things are very different now on account of the sin of our covenant head Adam. The universe up to and including the second heavens is in 'the bondage of corruption' and, in consequence, distress is a part of life.

I. David's Distress (13.1-2).

A. David's long loneliness. (Isaiah 49.14-16 is to the point).

B. David's long disappointment in seeking God. (Psalm 42.1-2).

C. David's long sorrow. Why be burdened with sorrows when the victory is won? (Isaiah 53.3a,4-5).

D. David's long humiliation.

II. David's Prayer (13.3-4).

A. David asks God to consider. Compare Psalm 102.1-2, 17-20.

B. David asks God to hear. (Psalm 80.1-3).

C. David asks God to lighten his eyes. (13.3,4).

III. David's Resolve

A. David's resolve to rejoice in God's salvation. (13.5) (1 Pe 1.5-9).

B. David's resolve to sing to the Lord. (13.6).

Conclusion

(13.5-6).
