Humility's Place at Christ's Side

The Lord's solemn words concerning the way in which He was to be treated in Jerusalem did not seem to leave any major impact on His disciples. In fact, two of them seized the occasion to press their desire that they should have places of great prominence in the kingdom that they assumed Jesus was going to establish in the world. James and John wanted to be on either side of Christ in His glory. His reply was that they did not know what they were asking. Then, He proceeded to instruct them in the way of suffering that Christ's followers would have to take in the world. His message was clear. The desire for prominence and commendation was not consistent with the life of service to Christ. It is a message that needs to be sounded out across the world in the 21st Century era of self-promotion and self-congratulation.
